  • by

Dealing with plumbing issues is never enjoyable. While it’s true that no problem is ever fun, plumbing issues such as clogged sinks and drains can seriously disrupt your daily routines, preventing you from showering, flushing the toilet, or even washing your hands. It’s quite unimaginable, isn’t it? Moreover, plumbing problems always seem to fall into extremes. They’re either straightforward and affordable to address, or they become complex and expensive, sometimes costing as much as a weekend getaway. It’s important to make sure you avoid plumbing issues during bathroom or kitchen renovations. Equally vital is hiring good contractors to prevent any plumbing problems.

Despite having your plumbing installed by professionals, everyday use and accidental errors such as pouring oil and grease down the drain can lead to issues over time. It can be challenging to identify or explain plumbing problems to plumbers. To prevent appearing uninformed, here are five common plumbing issues, along with tips for discussing them with a plumber and understanding what to expect from the service.

#1 Problem: Clogged Drain Pipe

Dealing with plumbing issues is never enjoyable. While it’s true that no problem is ever fun, plumbing issues such as clogged sinks and drains can seriously disrupt your daily routines, preventing you from showering, flushing the toilet, or even washing your hands. It can be challenging to identify or explain plumbing problems to plumbers. To prevent appearing uninformed, here are five common plumbing issues, along with tips for discussing them with a plumber and understanding what to expect from the service.

#2 Problem: Shower Leaks

This issue often points to a malfunctioning shower cartridge or valve. Another type of leak happens when water saturates the wall behind the shower or the ceiling below, particularly in upstairs bathrooms. If water is leaking beneath the shower or tub even when it’s not being used, there could be a wall leak.

If you notice water leaking from the showerhead, hard water could be the culprit, causing debris buildup in the cartridge and allowing water to seep through. If the leak happens only when the water is running, the showerhead itself might be the issue. Water on the floor could indicate a leak in the shower pan, within the wall, or a problem with the grout or sealant.

The plumber will inspect the issue and either replace the cartridge or propose a new one. They may also advise on replacing or sealing the showerhead. If there’s water in the shower basin, the plumber will locate the leak through diagnosis. Repair options range from fixing copper pipes, resealing the shower stall, and repairing the drain to replacing the shower pan/liner.

#3 Problem: Hot Water Shortage

The issue likely stems from the water heater. It might be a minor fix such as relighting the pilot light, or a more significant problem necessitating a complete replacement. Without a functional water heater, hot water won’t be available. If there are leaks or rust on the bottom of the water heater, swift replacement is essential as older units are inefficient and energy-wasting.

To address a potential hot water shortage, start by checking if the unit has tripped or if the pilot light is off. Locate the dedicated breaker for the heater and ensure it’s not tripped. If it is, attempt to reset it and listen for any humming noise from the heater. If the breaker keeps tripping, it’s advisable to seek professional assistance.

If replacing the hot water heater is necessary, a plumber will shut off the water supply to the heater. This process can be challenging if your heater lacks a reliable shut-off mechanism. They’ll then turn off the water supply to your home, drain the heater, remove the old unit, install the new one, and ensure all water and gas connections are secure.

#4 Problem: Low-Pressure Water

Water flow can be limited by a closed shutoff valve or aging galvanized water lines. Low water pressure gets worse over time, making daily activities like showering, watering the lawn, or washing dishes harder. If low water pressure affects the whole house, it might signal issues with the pressure-reducing valve, well pump, water filtration system, or water service line. Quick action to address low water pressure is vital to avoid losing significant amounts of water, potentially hundreds or thousands of gallons per day.

If you’re dealing with an issue in just one fixture, attempt to clear debris from the aerator or clean/replace the cartridge. If low water pressure affects the entire home, consider adjusting or replacing the pressure-reducing valve. In cases of low pressure caused by a significant leak in the water service line, the affected pipe section will require replacement.

#5 Problem: Continuous Toilet Running

The faulty flapper, responsible for sealing the tank and bowl, leads to water leakage. This not only causes inconvenience, especially at night, but also results in considerable water wastage and can contribute to higher water bills.

Typically, repairing running toilets involves replacing components inside the tank or adjusting the length of the flapper’s chain. If replacement parts are necessary, they typically include the flush valve, fill valve, gasket, nuts, bolts, and washers.
